The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced today, Friday, that the city plans to ban single-use plastic products when it hosts the 2024 Olympic Games as part of efforts to address the global plastic pollution crisis. Hidalgo stated at a press conference during the International Forum of Mayors Against Plastic Pollution, "We decided to make the Olympic Games the first major event without resorting to single-use plastic products." Visitors to the temporary venues for the Olympic events in the French capital will not be allowed to bring plastic bottles. The American beverage giant Coca-Cola, a sponsor of the Paris Olympics, will distribute its products in reusable glass containers and will set up more than 200 sparkling water fountains, which will be redistributed after the Games. Reusable cups will also be used for drinks during the marathon event at the Olympics.
