Italian Reporter Injured and Colleague Killed in Kherson

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that its correspondent Corrado Zunino was injured, and his Ukrainian assistant, Bohdan Bityk, died on Wednesday when they were ambushed in southern Ukraine, likely by Russian snipers, near a major bridge in the southern city of Kherson after crossing several Ukrainian checkpoints. Zunino stated in the article that he was shot in four places and is receiving treatment in a hospital in Kherson. The newspaper published a photo of what it claimed was his bulletproof vest, showing damage from a shell.

Additionally, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's office confirmed that a foreign journalist was injured, and a Ukrainian civilian died, without naming them. They added that Russian forces bombarded Kherson and that the journalist was hit by a bullet in the shoulder.

At least five journalists have been killed since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
