Britain Appoints First Woman as Director of Government Communications Headquarters

Britain announced today, Tuesday, the appointment of Anne Keast-Butler as the head of the intelligence agency known as the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly stated that Butler "has a proven track record at the heart of the UK's national security network, helping to counter threats from terrorists, cybercriminals, and malign foreign powers." He added, "She is the ideal candidate to lead the Government Communications Headquarters, and we will benefit from her extensive experience to help keep the British people safe."

The GCHQ stated in a release that Keast-Butler will officially take on the role in May, succeeding Jeremy Fleming, who announced in January his intention to step down after six years in the position. Anne Keast-Butler is currently serving as Deputy Director General at MI5.
