A 78-year-old American citizen residing in Hong Kong was convicted today, Monday, of espionage and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Suzhou Intermediate People's Court in China stated in a release that "Gong Xing Wan Leong was stripped of his political rights following a brief trial today." The court did not provide details regarding the charges against him, but mentioned that "the Suzhou National Security Bureau began an investigation into Leong on April 15, 2021, on suspicion of espionage." A spokesperson for the U.S. embassy confirmed to Reuters that the embassy is aware of the case but has no further comment to maintain privacy, noting that "the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad is the State Department's top priority."
