In northwest Pakistan, armed militants detonated an explosive device while targeting a temporary army camp with rockets and small arms, resulting in the deaths of at least 3 soldiers. Two officials told Reuters that "the forces engaged in a standoff with the attackers for several hours on Thursday evening near a mountainous tribal region along the border with Afghanistan." They added that "at least 3 soldiers and several militants were killed."
A report prepared by a Pakistani intelligence agency indicated that "a new unknown militant group called the Pakistan Jihad Movement is involved in the attack." Reuters was unable to confirm the report.
The attack comes after Pakistan announced a new campaign against militants following a resurgence of attacks in recent months, including a bombing at a mosque in February that killed over 100 people.
