White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated today that "the United States does not see a need to increase the size of its nuclear arsenal to deter the joint forces of Russia, China, and other rival nations." Sullivan said, "The United States does not need to increase our nuclear forces to surpass the total number of our competitors in order to deter them," noting that "while Moscow claims to suspend its participation in the New START treaty, Russia has also reaffirmed its commitment to the treaty's core limitations, suggesting a possible willingness to continue limiting strategic nuclear forces until 2026. We agree with that." He added, "It is not in our nation's interest to enter into an endless competition regarding strategic forces, and we are prepared to adhere to the limitations as long as Russia does the same."
