Six lions were killed in a national park in southern Kenya, representing a setback for wildlife conservation and the tourism sector, which is a crucial pillar of the country's economy. The killings followed the lions attacking a herd of goats near villages close to Amboseli National Park, according to Kenya's wildlife authority.
In a statement yesterday, the authority said, "Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as four other lions were killed last week," noting that its officials have met with representatives from the local community to try to find a solution to these recurring incidents.
Residents in areas surrounding Kenya's nature reserves frequently complain that lions and other carnivores kill livestock. Amboseli National Park, which covers an area of 39,206 hectares, is home to several key wildlife species, including elephants, leopards, buffalo, and giraffes.
