Conflict Within the Republican Party Over the U.S. Presidency

Former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie from the Republican Party intend to enter the race for the U.S. presidency in the 2024 elections, seeking to challenge the dominance of the frontrunner Donald Trump. A source familiar with the matter reported that "Christie, who was an advisor to Trump's 2016 campaign before becoming one of his fierce critics, will officially announce his 2024 campaign on June 6." Three sources told Reuters that "Pence is expected to enter the race against his former boss on June 7." North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum also intends to join the race on the same day as Pence, according to a source familiar with Burgum's plans. Trump holds a significant lead in polls within the Republican field, which now includes more than ten declared or potential candidates. His closest competitor is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who entered the race last week.
