Death of a Female Elephant at a Pakistani Zoo

Officials reported that "a female elephant at the Karachi Zoo in Pakistan died yesterday, Saturday, despite significant efforts to treat her after suffering from a severe illness for nine days." The 17-year-old elephant fell into a water pool earlier this month and was unable to rise without assistance.

The organization Four Paws stated in a press release that she "died due to her critical condition. She spent a long time lying on the ground, a situation that threatens the lives of elephants."

Veterinarian at Four Paws, Amir Khalil, confirmed that "it is sad for her to die at the age of seventeen, while she could have lived for many more years," pointing out that the Karachi Zoo does not meet international standards. The director of the Karachi Zoo was dismissed this month due to complaints of negligence. In previous years, two lions suffocated in Pakistan after staff attempted to extract them from their den using smoke.
