The pro-military news site "NP" reported that former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Myanmar's military ruler Min Aung Hlaing in the capital Naypyidaw. According to military council spokesman Zaw Min Tun, "They exchanged views on the latest developments in Myanmar and held positive and candid discussions." Myanmar has been in crisis since the military overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, as military leaders seek to tighten their control and engage in fighting on multiple fronts against ethnic minority rebels and a pro-democracy resistance movement. He added, "Ban Ki-moon called for the release of Suu Kyi, who was arrested during the coup and is serving a 33-year prison sentence for multiple convictions," noting that a meeting with the former Nobel laureate leader of the country would not be possible.
