Temporary Closure of the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia Due to Anticipated Protests

The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia announced today, Wednesday, that it will close its doors to the public tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday, amidst expectations of pro-Palestinian protests in the country. A national demonstration is expected to take place tomorrow, Thursday, with participation from most political parties and organizations in Tunisia, including the Tunisian General Labour Union, which has a large public following. Protests are also planned for Friday, as Hamas leaders have called for a day of support across the Arab world. The embassy stated in a release that “out of caution, the embassy will be closed to the public for routine services on Thursday, October 12, and Friday, October 13,” adding that it is not aware of any specific or credible threat at this time.
