Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, confirmed that "Russia knew from the beginning that Ukraine was responsible for the drone attack on the Kremlin in early May." This statement came after The New York Times reported that "U.S. intelligence assessments revealed that a Ukrainian special unit affiliated with the military or intelligence may have orchestrated the drone attack targeting the Kremlin this month."
The newspaper stated that "the U.S. assessment is based on intercepted Russian and Ukrainian communications," revealing that "the United States detected Ukrainian conversations in which officials expressed their belief that their country was responsible for the attack, as well as intercepted Russian communications indicating that it was not a fake operation carried out by Moscow."
U.S. officials noted that they do not believe that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signs off on all covert operations. They mentioned that it remains unclear how aware he might be of such operations prior to their execution.
Meanwhile, one of Zelensky's senior aides denied Kyiv's involvement in the "strange and pointless" drone attack on the Kremlin and downplayed the information contained in the two U.S. media reports.
