G7 to Hold First Meeting on Artificial Intelligence

Japan announced today, Friday, that officials from the Group of Seven industrialized nations will meet in the coming days to discuss issues related to generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT. Japanese Minister of Communications Takuyaki Matsumoto confirmed that "government officials from the member countries will hold the first meeting on artificial intelligence on May 30 of this year, to address matters such as intellectual property protection, misinformation campaigns, and how regulatory measures should be established for this technology." Matsumoto stated that Japan, which is chairing the G7 this year, will lead discussions in the group on responsive use of generative artificial intelligence technologies, noting that "the forum hopes to come up with proposals to present to the leaders of the countries by the end of the year." Last week, G7 leaders, which include the United States, several European Union countries, and Japan, agreed to establish a government forum named the "Hiroshima AI Process" to discuss issues related to rapidly evolving AI tools.
