The Brazilian Animal Protein Association stated today, Friday, that Egypt's decision to temporarily exempt chicken imports from customs duties will benefit exports from Brazil to the North African market. This week, Egypt announced that it has decided to exempt whole chicken from a 30 percent tariff. According to the association, this product is the main poultry item sold by Brazil to Egypt. Ricardo Santin, the association's president, commented that Brazilian whole chicken will become more competitive in Egypt due to the temporary customs exemption, which will bolster supplies in Egypt that have been affected by avian influenza and rising production costs. Approximately 90 percent of the whole chicken imported by Egypt comes from Brazil, which is the largest exporter of this product in the world. Brazil has also reached an agreement allowing producers from the South American country to export chicken to Algeria.
