The "Down" website reported that IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva urged Pakistani authorities to "impose more taxes on the rich and protect the poor" amid rising inflation rates. Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, Georgieva stated, "Our program demands more taxes from the wealthy to provide protection for the poor in Pakistan." An official statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan noted that Interim Prime Minister Anwar Haq Kakar expressed gratitude to the IMF for agreeing to a $3 billion agreement to support the Pakistani economy. Kakar also informed Georgieva about various measures taken by the Pakistani government to "ensure stability and revitalize the country's economy."
