Egypt's Prime Minister: We are Strengthening the Electric Link with Jordan

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly revealed today, Sunday, that Egypt is working to strengthen the electric link with Jordan to accommodate a capacity of up to three gigawatts, with plans to expand "joint cooperation frameworks" with Iraq. The current capacity of the electric link between Egypt and Jordan is 550 megawatts. Madbouly stated, "We have an electric connection with Jordan with a capacity of about 550 megawatts, and we are currently working to strengthen the line to accommodate larger capacities, aiming to reach Iraq as well, where there is a possibility to increase the capacity of the link with Jordan to two or three gigawatts." Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, during his visit to Cairo, mentioned that a second line connecting Jordan and Iraq will allow some Egyptian electricity to reach Iraq, with the first phase of the second link expected to be completed in June. Iraq, which has signed electricity supply agreements with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf countries, suffers from an electricity shortage that worsens during the hot summer months. Egypt has an energy surplus and is also looking to increase exports to countries including Sudan, Libya, and Saudi Arabia.
