Ajax Confirms Departure of Coach John Heitinga

Ajax will not renew the contract of coach John Heitinga after an disappointing performance in the 2022-2023 season, finishing third in the Dutch league and failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009. Ajax's Director of Football, Sven Mislintat, stated on Thursday: "John joined to help the club during a difficult time and did so with great dedication. We are very grateful for that." He added, "He learned a lot in the last two months, and we would like to play a role in his development and maintain his connection with the club. However, I have concluded that Ajax needs a more experienced coach." Heitinga took over in January after the departure of Alfred Schröder on a contract lasting until the end of the season. Under Heitinga's leadership, the team rose from fifth to third place, but Ajax has decided not to extend his contract, although he may still play a role with the team.
