A local official announced that nine people were killed and several others injured in an ambush by unknown attackers in northern Ghana on Thursday morning. The attack occurred near the border with Burkina Faso, where Islamist militants are waging an insurgency. Violent acts by militants are rare in Ghana, but neighboring Togo and Ivory Coast have experienced incursions by militants crossing their northern borders to carry out sporadic attacks. Zubair Abdallah, the chief of the Bole district in Ghana, stated that the attackers opened fire on two vehicles carrying traders who were on their way to a commercial town, adding that the injured are receiving treatment at the Bawku Government Hospital. He noted that most of the victims are women.
