The mayor of Marseille, France, Benoît Payan, announced today that rescue workers have recovered 6 bodies from the rubble of two collapsed buildings following an explosion in the city located in the south of the country. Payan stated on his official Twitter account, "This morning we feel great sadness and pain," adding that rescue operations are ongoing "relentlessly."
Housing Minister Olivier Klein, who is scheduled to visit Marseille today, indicated that about 200 people have been evacuated from buildings near the explosion site. Earlier, authorities mentioned that nine people are believed to be missing after the explosion that occurred yesterday, which caused the collapse of two residential buildings and partially damaged a third. The collapse resulted in a fire that complicated rescue efforts, which was still burning this morning, while the cause of the explosion remains unknown.
