A fire has devastated the upper floors of the historic building "Henderson Old Hall," which housed students from the renowned Newcastle University before being abandoned for years. The Newcastle police have arrested a man suspected of deliberately starting the fire, resulting in damages estimated in the hundreds of thousands.
According to "Sky News," more than 50 firefighters worked to save what remained of the structure. Residents and neighboring businesses were urged to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters managed the blaze. Northumbria Police stated that the arrested man has been released on bail and encouraged anyone with information about the fire to reach out.
A spokesperson for Newcastle University, which still owns the building, expressed, "We are all saddened by the fire at Henderson Old Hall." He added, "Although it has been empty for several years, many of our former students have fond memories of their time there since it first opened as a residence in 1932."
