China Expels Canadian Diplomat in Shanghai

China expelled a Canadian diplomat in Shanghai today, named Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, escalating the ongoing tension in relations between the two countries due to concerns about Chinese influence in Canada. Canada expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei yesterday following an intelligence report that accused him of attempting to target a Canadian MP who criticized China's treatment of the Muslim Uyghur minority. This prompted Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to state on Monday that she "will not tolerate any form of foreign interference." The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that "Beijing has asked the Canadian diplomat to leave the country by May 13, in response to Canada's unreasonable actions, and Beijing reserves the right to respond with further measures." The Chinese consulate general in Toronto emphasized that "the Canadian intelligence report is incorrect."
