Since 2020, Lebanon has seen a significant decrease in the number of traffic accidents. The main reasons for this decline are, first, the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, which led to the closure of institutions, clubs, schools, and other places, resulting in reduced traffic movement. Second, the impact of the severe economic crisis and the high price of gasoline has also contributed, as confirmed by the International Information.
Despite the decrease in the number of accidents, it is noteworthy that the number of casualties has risen. In 2018, there were 9 casualties for every 100 traffic accidents, which increased to 16 casualties in 2022. During the first five months of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, the distribution of statistics was as follows:
- A 6.5% decrease in the number of traffic accidents.
- A 5.5% decrease in the number of injured.
- A 17% increase in the number of casualties.
