Bayern Falls 3-1 in Mainz, Intensifying Title Race

Bayern Munich suffered a painful 3-1 defeat against their hosts Mainz, as they conceded three times in just 14 minutes during the second half, continuing their shaky form which may now cost them the German Bundesliga title with five rounds remaining. Bayern, who were eliminated from the Champions League by Manchester City in the quarter-finals last Wednesday, did not expect their day to turn disastrous after taking the lead with a header from Sadio Mane in the 29th minute.

Bayern's points tally now stands at 59, just two points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who are set to host Eintracht Frankfurt later today. Despite controlling 70% of possession for over an hour, Bayern, who have won only two of their last seven matches under coach Thomas Tuchel, failed to create more opportunities.

The visiting team was punished for their poor defensive display when they repeatedly failed to clear the ball from their penalty area, leading to a poorly cleared ball from goalkeeper Yann Sommer, which fell to Ludovic Ajorque, who easily scored in the 65th minute.

Following another defensive error from Josip Stanisic, Leandro Barreiro fired the ball into the net, giving Mainz the lead amid the disbelief of Bayern's management in the stands. Bayern's woes were completed when Aaron Martin struck a stunning shot from the left into Sommer's net with 11 minutes remaining, keeping his team unbeaten for the tenth consecutive match.

Mainz now sits in sixth place and is competing for qualification for European competitions next season.
