New York Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Edward Caban as the city’s police commissioner, making him the first American of Latin American descent to hold this position in New York's 178-year history. Adams, himself a former New York police officer, introduced Caban (55 years old) as the city's police commissioner during a press conference in the Bronx, where Caban began his career as a rookie police officer in 1991. Caban will lead the largest police department in the United States, overseeing about 35,000 police officers and 18,000 civilian employees. Caban had been serving as the acting police commissioner since Keichant Sewell's resignation last month after she spent 18 months in the role. Sewell was the first woman to lead the department.
