Shooting of Turkish Employee at Swedish Consulate in Western Turkey

Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) reported today, Tuesday, that a Turkish employee at the Swedish honorary consulate in Izmir, western Turkey, was shot and seriously injured in front of the consulate building. The Izmir Governorship stated in a press release that the police arrested the attacker, who is a Turkish citizen registered in the Agri province in eastern Turkey, confirming that the police are investigating the incident. Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc condemned the attack, stating that a criminal investigation has been initiated. For its part, the Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed that it is in close contact with the general consulate in Istanbul and its staff in Turkey, noting that the Swedish consul general will travel to Izmir tomorrow, Wednesday, to gather more information about the incident. The ministry added that it would not disclose further details "about the threats faced by diplomatic personnel or the security measures taken, as this could undermine the purpose of these measures."
