FC Barcelona, the giant of Spanish La Liga, announced on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement to sign Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense. The Brazilian forward is set to join the Spanish champions starting from the 2024-2025 season, with a contract lasting until 2031.
While the financial details were not disclosed, media reports indicated that Barcelona has agreed to pay €40 million ($44.07 million), in addition to $21 million based on additional terms for the player's services. Roque is seen as a successor to Robert Lewandowski, who will turn 35 next month.
The 18-year-old player scored 22 goals for Paranaense in 66 matches, helping the team reach the Copa Libertadores final last season. Roque made his international debut in March with the five-time world champions.
Barcelona stated in a press release: "From a football perspective, the forward is still in a developmental phase, but his adaptability means he can also play in a winger position if needed. He has a keen vision of the field, great speed, and high skills in front of goal," noting that a release clause of €500 million has been included in Roque's contract.
