1930 - Amy Johnson landed her "Gypsy Moth" aircraft in Darwin, northern Australia, becoming the first woman to fly solo from England.

1974 - American pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington passed away.

1982 - During the Iran-Iraq war, Iranian forces regained control of Khorramshahr after it had been occupied by Iraq for 20 months.

2000 - Reuters correspondent Kurt Schork was killed in Sierra Leone during an attack that also resulted in the deaths of a Spanish journalist and four soldiers from Sierra Leone.

2001 - 23 people were killed and more than 300 others injured when a wedding hall collapsed in Jerusalem, marking the worst civilian disaster in modern Israeli history.

2002 - Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation of Milwaukee Roman Catholic Archbishop Rembert Weakland, who was accused of attempting sexual assault.
