17 Killed in Flooded Towns After Ukrainian Dam Collapse

Andrei Aleksinko, the head of the Kherson region government appointed by Russia, announced today, Tuesday, that 17 people have died after two towns under Russian control in southern Ukraine were flooded following the collapse of the massive Kakhovka Dam a week ago. He specified that "12 fatalities were confirmed in Hola Prystan and five others in Oleshky," which are small towns located downstream from the Kakhovka Dam. Dozens have been rescued from rooftops of submerged houses in the aftermath of the disaster, and volunteers reported to an independent Russian news outlet last week that they estimated fatalities to be in the hundreds. Russia controls the southern bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region, while Ukraine controls the opposite bank along with the Mykolaiv region. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated on Monday that 10 people were killed in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, with 42 others missing. Ukraine and Russia are exchanging accusations regarding the destruction of the dam located in areas controlled by Russia in Ukraine.
