Despite the importance of the goal, Swiss national team striker Breel Embolo chose not to celebrate after scoring in his country's match during the 2022 World Cup. After an evenly matched game, Embolo scored for Switzerland against their Cameroonian opponent in the 48th minute, as part of Group G in the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Thursday.
While his teammates were elated by the crucial goal, Embolo stood still, raising his hands in the air, with a somber expression on his face, refusing to celebrate his first World Cup goal. It was later revealed that he is of Cameroonian origin, born in Yaoundé in 1997. At the age of five, Embolo's mother took him to France after separating from his father. There, she met a Swiss man whom she married, who took care of Embolo and moved the family to Switzerland, where Breel Embolo grew up and progressed through the youth academies of FC Basel.
Embolo obtained Swiss citizenship in 2014 and has become one of the stars of the Swiss national team over the past few years.
