A man armed with a rifle and a handgun killed three people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday, before turning the gun on himself in what law enforcement officials have described as a racially motivated crime. Jacksonville Police Chief T.K. Waters said at a press conference, "The shooter hated Black people." The identity of the shooter, characterized by the police chief as a white man, has not been released. The three victims were Black—a man and a woman. The police chief indicated that authorities believe the perpetrator acted alone and that prior to the incident, he wrote "several statements" detailing his hatred for Black people. Jacksonville City Council member JuCoby Pittman described the incident as a tragedy.
