More than 50 pilot whales have died in Scotland after stranding on the shores of Lewis Island, marking the largest mass stranding of whales in the country in decades. Authorities were alerted to the incident on Sunday morning, and attempts to save more than 12 whales that were still alive were unsuccessful. Rescuers later decided to euthanize them compassionately. In total, 55 whales died, and it is believed that only one whale survived. The pilot whale is a type of oceanic dolphin that can grow up to seven meters long and weigh up to three tons. Returning them to the sea requires intensive human effort, which may involve pushing them by hand or using special nets to drag them into deep water.
