The United States welcomed the agreement that Iraq signed yesterday with the French company Total Energies to boost production in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated: "This massive agreement was officially signed this week and includes participation from regional and American companies, marking a significant step toward Iraq achieving energy self-sufficiency and fulfilling its climate goals." He reaffirmed that "the United States supports Iraq's ongoing efforts to enhance local resilience and diversify energy supplies." The agreement was initially signed in 2021 but faced repeated delays due to disagreements among Iraqi politicians regarding the terms. It was finalized in April when Iraq agreed to take a smaller share than initially requested, receiving 30 percent of the project, while Total Energies secured a 45 percent share and Qatar Energy obtained 25 percent.
