Reports indicated that al-Maqdah had resigned from his position in Fatah after the failure of negotiations to reach a ceasefire agreement. He has been quoted saying, "I will not be a false witness to the massacre taking place in the Ain al-Hilweh camp, as I will not end my life in a game of blood, given that a large conspiracy is being plotted against Ain al-Hilweh camp."
