Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo broke his silence after his country's elimination from the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup at the hands of Morocco, following a 1-0 defeat yesterday. Ronaldo wrote a message on his official Facebook page, saying: "Winning the World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career... Fortunately, I have won many international titles, including with the Portuguese national team, but placing our country's name at the highest level in the world was my greatest dream."
He added: "I fought for Portugal... I fought hard for this dream... In the five times I participated in the World Cup over 16 years, always alongside great players and with the support of millions of Portuguese, I gave my all. I left everything on the field. I have never turned my back on the fight nor have I ever given up on that dream."
Ronaldo continued: "Unfortunately, the dream ended yesterday. I want you all to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, and there have been many speculations, but my focus with Portugal has not changed for a moment. I have always been one to fight for the goal of everyone and I will never turn my back on my teammates or my country."
He concluded by saying: "There isn’t much to say now. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful; now we hope the atmosphere will be good and allow everyone to make their own decisions."
