European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed today, Monday, that "the European Union is ready to enhance cooperation with the Philippines in the field of maritime security." This statement followed a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila. In a joint statement with Marcos, she said: "We are ready to enhance cooperation with the Philippines in the area of maritime security in the region, through information sharing, threat assessments, and building coast guard capabilities." Furthermore, Ursula von der Leyen noted that China's display of military power, including in the Taiwan Strait, affects the region and may have global implications.
