Five Killed in South Africa Amid Taxi Drivers' Strike

Authorities in South Africa announced today, Tuesday, that five people were killed in Cape Town after a taxi drivers' strike that began last week turned into violence. South Africa's Police Minister Bheki Cele stated, "A 40-year-old British citizen was shot dead during the protests on Thursday," adding that investigations into the murders and violence are ongoing. He noted that authorities have arrested 120 suspects since Thursday on charges of property damage, looting, and committing acts of violence. Taxi drivers expressed their anger after a new law granted local authorities the right to confiscate offending vehicles, including those driven without a license or without plates. Sporadic violence erupted in Cape Town after police began confiscating vehicles last week, with angry protesters setting fire to buses and cars and throwing stones at the police.
