Two U.S. officials revealed that the United States will announce a new commitment to purchase military aid worth $1.3 billion for Kyiv in its struggle against Russia in the coming days. One official stated that the previously unreported weapons package will include air defense systems, anti-drone systems, explosive-laden drones, and ammunition. The U.S. is using funds from its Ukrainian Security Assistance Initiative, which allows President Joe Biden's administration to purchase weapons from manufacturers instead of drawing from U.S. stockpiles.
One source mentioned that the air defense weapon known as the "Vampire" system, manufactured by L3 Harris Technologies, is among the weapons and munitions the U.S. intends to buy for Ukraine. The support package will also include two different types of kamikaze munitions: the Phoenix Ghost drone, manufactured by Aevex Aerospace, a private company based in California, and the small Switchblade drone made by AeroVironment.
An insider noted that Ukraine will receive a substantial number of anti-drone systems manufactured by the Australian company DroneShield, along with radar systems, sensors, and analysis systems. The delivery of the weapons and systems will depend on their availability and production schedules. The contents and value of the package may also change before its announcement.
