India Sets Limit on Carbon Emissions from Green Hydrogen

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced on Saturday that the government has decided to set a limit of two kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions per kilogram of hydrogen produced for it to be classified as a "green" source of renewable energy. The ministry stated in a release that this announcement will establish a long-awaited definition for green hydrogen production in India. It added, "With this notification, India becomes one of the few countries in the world to define green hydrogen." India aims to become a global hub for green hydrogen production, targeting the production of five million metric tons of fuel annually by 2030, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 50 million metric tons and save over 12 billion dollars currently spent on fossil fuel imports. Although India is expected to start production in 2026, it has begun talks to sign bilateral agreements with the European Union, Japan, and other countries to commence exports of the fuel.
