Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets commented on the war between Israel and Hamas, predicting that "the Gaza Strip will soon disappear from the map." Hoogerbeets stated in a post on his X account: "The whole world should stop and demand an end to the mass genocide of the people in Gaza. More than 10,000 civilians have been killed with no end in sight. This is not fighting terrorism. This is terrorism!"
He added, "There is no point for us in doing earthquake forecasts while this… We are trying to save lives while thousands of people are being killed," announcing a "suspension of his services for the time being." Hoogerbeets predicted that the region would disappear from the map, saying, "Gaza will be annexed to become part of Israel, remember my words."
