Sky reported today, Wednesday, that the International Football Federation (FIFA) is considering lifting the total ban on Russia's participation in international tournaments, after the European Football Association (UEFA) softened its stance on Russia last week.
The report stated: "The decision may be announced during a FIFA Council meeting later today, which could allow the Russian national team to participate in the Under-17 World Cup if they qualify for the tournament."
However, the European Union stated after a meeting of its executive committee in Limassol, Cyprus, last week: "Children should not be punished for actions that are solely the responsibility of adults," adding that the Russian Under-17 team will be allowed to participate in UEFA competitions "during this season."
The Ukrainian Football Association urged UEFA to reconsider its decision and stated that it will not participate in tournaments featuring Russian teams. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, UEFA decided to ban all Russian teams, whether at the national or club level, from participating in continental competitions.
