Pakistani police stated today, Sunday, that "at least 40 people were killed and more than 130 were injured due to an explosion that occurred during a political gathering in the northwest of the country." The police added: "There is still no confirmation of the cause of the explosion, which took place at a gathering for the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, known for its connections to hardline political Islam, in the Bajaur area." A state of emergency has been declared in hospitals in Bajaur and surrounding areas where most of the injured have been transported.
