German prosecutors announced today, Thursday, the detention of a Syrian national accused of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes through torture and forced labor between 2012 and 2015. German prosecutors stated in a press release, "Ahmad (the suspect) was involved in brutally beating civilians, as well as in two incidents in 2012 and 2015 where detainees were forced to work under threat of armed violence and without food or water." Germany has played a leading role in prosecuting Syrian war criminals under universal jurisdiction laws that allow courts to hear cases of crimes against humanity committed anywhere in the world. In Frankfurt, a Syrian doctor is on trial, suspected of committing crimes against humanity that involved torturing detainees in military hospitals in Syria, in the latest case in the country concerning state-backed torture allegations in the Syrian conflict.
