Search operations continue for missing individuals under the rubble of the residential building that collapsed in Alexandria, consisting of 13 floors on Khalil Hamada Street in the Sidi Bishr area, eastern Alexandria, Egypt, this Monday morning, amid reports of people trapped in the wreckage. Alexandria Governor Major General Mohamed Sharif stated that there are 8 reports of missing persons, but the number may rise since each floor consists of 5 residential apartments. In the latest rescue operations, the body of a 22-year-old Sudanese man was retrieved in the evening. The governor confirmed that investigations have begun to determine the causes of the building splitting vertically in half.
The first police station in the Montazah area received a notification from the Emergency Police Department regarding the collapse of a structure on Khalil Hamada Street in front of the sewage station within the jurisdiction, indicating that people were trapped under the debris. Officers from the department and civil protection forces, along with ambulance teams and Major General Mohamed Sahlool, head of the Montazah First district, rushed to the incident site, establishing a security cordon and commencing debris removal.
The initial examination revealed that the 13-story building collapsed almost entirely, resulting in damaged vehicles and the presence of some residents and supermarket patrons trapped beneath the rubble, according to eyewitnesses. Civil protection forces are attempting to clear the debris and search for survivors or victims. The Egyptian Ministry of Health has raised alert status in Alexandria hospitals to receive any injuries from the collapsed building.
