UN: Over 100,000 People Fleeing Sudan to Chad

UNHCR representative Laura Lo Castro confirmed today that "more than 100,000 people have fled the violence in Sudan to neighboring Chad, and this number may rise in the next three months." The UNHCR calls for urgent support for Chad as the number of refugee arrivals exceeds 100,000. Reports from our teams at the border indicate that new waves of arrivals continue.

Laura Lo Castro stated: "With the rainy season approaching in the coming weeks, we need massive logistical supplies to transport refugees from border areas.. We must immediately establish new camps and expand existing ones." She added: "We need $214.1 million to provide essential services to the displaced in the country, of which only 16 percent is currently available."

"We are increasingly concerned about the safety and wellbeing of refugees and other civilians caught up in the conflict in Sudan. Humanitarian access remains limited and we received worrying reports of human rights abuses against refugees."
