UN Warns of Consequences of Abductions of Public Figures in Libya

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has revealed that security entities have been involved in abduction, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearance of public figures in the country. The mission called for the immediate release of these individuals and urged restraint, including the cessation of incitement rhetoric.

The UN mission expressed its "deep concern over the ongoing abductions, arbitrary detentions, and enforced disappearances of citizens and public figures by various security bodies in Libya." On July 12, reports indicated the detention of former Minister of Finance Faraj Boumtari at Mitiga Airport, where he was taken to an unknown location. The reports also noted that five members of the High Council of State were prevented from traveling at the same airport, according to the statement.

The mission emphasized that these actions "increase tensions between local communities and tribes," urging Libyan authorities and security formations to "release all arbitrarily detained individuals, ensure independent investigations into all unlawful detentions and abductions, and bring the perpetrators to justice."
