G20 Concludes Meetings in India Without a Final Statement

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated today, Tuesday, that "the two-day meetings between economic policymakers and finance ministers of the G20 will conclude without a joint statement due to disagreements among major powers regarding the war in Ukraine." She noted that "our agenda is moving forward and has been agreed upon by all."

She added, "Most Western countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, sought to condemn Russia, while Russia and China opposed any such move." Sitharaman mentioned that India, as the host country, could not formulate a final statement acceptable to all member states, as some countries insisted on describing the conflict as a war, while Russia describes its campaign, now entering its sixteenth month, as a "special military operation." India has largely maintained a neutral stance, refraining from condemning the Russian invasion and urging for a diplomatic solution, while also increasing its purchases of low-priced Russian oil.
