South Koreans have become a year or two younger with the implementation of new laws that mandate the exclusive use of the international method for calculating age, replacing the traditional method commonly used in the country, according to Reuters. Under the most common age system in South Korean life, everyone is considered one year old at birth, with an additional year added on January 1st of each year. Since the early 1960s, the country has used the international standard of counting from zero at birth and adding a year on each birthday for medical and legal documentation. In December, South Korea issued laws to abolish the traditional method and fully adopt the international standard. A government survey conducted in 2022 found that 86% of South Koreans said they would use the international method for calculating their age once the new laws take effect.
