Human Rights Committee Approves Proposal for Child Marriage Protection Law

The Human Rights Committee held a session today in the House of Representatives, chaired by Deputy Michel Moussa, with the presence of deputies Melhem Khalaf, Qassem Hashem, George Okais, Assad Dergham, and Antoine Habshi. Attending from the Ministry of Justice were Judge Ayman Ahmed and Judge Angela Dagher, from the Ministry of Social Affairs was Rima Barbar, from the Beirut Bar Association was Elizabeth Zakharia Sioufi, lawyer Paul Marqus (Justicia Foundation), from the Lebanese Women Against Violence Coalition was Amin Muhammad Bashir, from the Lebanese Democratic Women's Gathering was lawyer Ghada Nicola, from the National Commission for Lebanese Women's Affairs was Claudine Aoun, and from the Lebanese Women's Council was Karima Shabou.

After the session, Moussa stated: "After multiple sessions discussing the proposal for a law to protect children from early marriage, the committee has approved the proposal with some amendments. This proposal will be sent for discussion to the Administration and Justice Committee and then to the General Assembly of the House for a decision on acceptance, rejection, or modification."
