Sale of a Message from a Titanic Passenger at Auction for $12,000

According to press sources, "a letter from a Titanic passenger written aboard the ship was sold at auction in Uruguay for $12,000." According to the website "efe.com," the letter, dated April 11, 1912, was written by Uruguayan Ramon Artagavitia Gomez to his brother and was sent from Ireland, where Titanic's last stop was before crossing the Atlantic Ocean and the tragedy occurred.

According to the website of the auction house Zorrilla, Gomez's brother later added on one of the pages: "The last letter my dear brother Ramon wrote to me, three days later, the Titanic was in disaster and sank."

The letter was sold for the opening auction price, and the buyer's name was not disclosed. The ship, owned and operated by the British company White Star Line, tragically sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,517 people out of 2,224 on board.

It now lies at the bottom of the sea about 350 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, although the fragile wreck is deteriorating so rapidly underwater that it could completely disappear within the next forty years.
