The lawyer of prominent Egyptian opposition figure Hisham Qassem, Nasser Amin, revealed today, Saturday, that "his client has started a hunger strike during his trial on charges of defamation, libel, and verbal assault." The lawyer mentioned that "Qassem appeared very fatigued." Qassem was accused last month of slandering a former minister and later of verbally assaulting police officers at a police station after being brought there, allegations that his allies state are politically motivated. The official MENA news agency reported that "Qassem appeared in court behind bars today before his trial was postponed until September 9, during which the court was to review the defense team's requests for his release on bail, as well as case files." Politicians from the Free Current stated days ago that the case against Qassem is politically motivated and called for an alternative to Sisi.
